PART CHIMP - "Thriller" CD
If you think the sleeve's awesome, just wait until you hear the album. Britain's leading purveyors of sludge, Part Chimp return with their third studio long-player, packed with the kind of relentless, overloaded riffology that can be traced back through bands like The Melvins all the way back to Black Sabbath. Far from being an outright noise album, you can make out plenty of melodic happenings caught beneath the torrents of distorted debris - and 'Today 3' sounds especially impressive as an anthemic slice of alt. metal - but it's the sheer, punishing weight of the band's bass-heavy delivery that makes the as exciting as they are; I don't know what sort of distortion pedals Part Chimp use, but the kind of crumbling, sustain-killing extremities of 'FFFFF' (particularly in the left speaker) are monstrously good, and loaded with an abundance of texture.
